Position Details
- Pre-Certified Starting Salary $61,096
- Intermediate Incentive $4,000 (after being cleared to practice by DEPT OMD)
- Paramedic Incentive $7,000 (after being cleared to practice by DEPT OMD)
- Fire Recruit Salary $56,208 (after the required certifications are received, the salary increased to $61,096)
Pre-Certified Defined
- Applicant must possess Virginia Department of Fire Programs FFI, FFII & Hazardous Materials Operations certifications or be eligible for Virginia Reciprocity
- Applicant must possess a current National Registry or Virginia Office of EMS Emergency Medical Technician Certification or be eligible for Virginia Reciprocity

Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of application. There is no maximum age limit.
- Requires a high school diploma or GED.
- Requires a valid VA driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
- Applicant must pass a computer-based or written Firefighter Assessment. The Firefighter Assessment is designed to assess an applicant’s ability to process information and think critically. Pre-Certified applicants are not required to take the computer-based or written Firefighter Assessment.
- All Applicants must pass a Physical Agility Test.
- Applicant must possess or be eligible for and successfully complete a National Registry EMT Certification, VDFP Firefighter I & II, EVOC III and ICS700 & ICS800, ICS100 & ICS200 courses as part of the Fire/EMS Training Academy or be eligible for Virginia reciprocity. (Pre-certified applicants may possess a Virginia EMT Certification).
- Applicant must maintain a cumulative minimum average of 75% which will be tabulated from all department quizzes, tests, and practical evaluations during the GCFR Training Academy.
- Upon successful completion of the GCFR Training Academy, personnel will be assigned to Operations and will serve a one-year probationary period.
The Application Process:
1st Step
Application Package Review
During this step, the application package is reviewed for assurance of an applicant completing the application package in its entirety and meeting the position’s minimum requirements.
2nd Step
Physical Agility Practice Tests (Optional)
During this step, the applicants will have an opportunity to practice the physical agility test. This process is open to anyone interested and is not required.
3rd Step
Computer-Based/Written Firefighter Assessment
During this step, the applicant must pass a computer-based or written firefighter assessment. The firefighter assessment will assess an applicant’s ability to process information and think critically.
4th Step
Physical Agility Testing
During this step, applicants are scheduled for completion of the department’s physical agility test. This test evaluates the applicant’s abilities to physically perform functions commonly required of a firefighter when performing operational firefighting and rescue duties. 5th Step
Panel Review
During this step, candidates will complete a panel interview.
6th Step
Background & Medical Checks
During this step, the candidates will complete background investigations, physicals, and drug screen testing.
