Chief Ferguson is pleased to announce a Battalion Chief promotion effective November 1, 2025. Please join us in congratulating Battalion Chief Brandon T. Proffitt.
Captain Brandon Proffitt is highly deserving and has diligently prepared himself over the course of 26 years with the Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue & Emergency Services. He began his career in the department in 1999 as a volunteer, later joining the Lifeline contract staff in 2004 to provide supplemental ambulance staffing to Goochland County.
In 2007, Brandon was hired as the department’s first Volunteer Coordinator, focusing on recruitment and retention of volunteer members, supporting community programs, and managing logistics in the field. In 2011, he transitioned into an operational role as a career Firefighter / EMS Provider.
Brandon is a National Registered Paramedic and serves as an RSI Medic. He brings strong mechanical aptitude and expert knowledge of radio communications systems and has led numerous projects supporting the department’s apparatus fleet and facilities. In addition, he is an instructor with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, holding multiple instructor credentials and delivering training locally in our jurisdiction and throughout the region.
One of his most significant accomplishments has been leading the development of the new live fire training structure project at the Henley Fire-Rescue Training Center. He was instrumental in the design of the new container style Class B training prop and secured a Live Fire Training Structure Grant from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. The Draeger live fire training structure opened officially on August 29, 2024. Utilizing LP Gas to simulate fire conditions, it provides realistic flame, heat, and limited visibility – mirroring real-world firefighting environments. This facility has allowed live fire training to return to the Henley Fire-Rescue Training Center and revolutionized fire service training both locally and regionally. In recognition of this achievement, Governor Glenn Youngkin recognized Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services with the 2024 Governor’s Fire Service Award for Excellence in Virginia Fire Services for its innovative live fire training structure.
Captain Proffitt brings valuable experience from his time with Louisa County Fire & EMS, Prince George Fire & EMS, and Powhatan County Fire Rescue. He has consistently demonstrated positive, effective leadership and has earned the respect of his peers throughout the fire service.
