At 06:33 this morning Goochland Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to a dog in an abandoned well deep in the woods.
Units arrived on scene to find a medium size dog that had fallen approximately 30 feet. The dog could be seen standing in shallow water and whimpering.
Engine 651s crew found the well to be oxygen deficient and began atmospheric monitoring and ventilation. Rescue 667, Truck 601, Medic 660, Training 601 and Car 1 set up a tripod and haul system to retrieve the dog. Henrico County Division of Fire Technical Rescue Team was requested and responded to make the confined space entry.
Veterinarian Dr. Lori Elliott responded to the scene to initiate care. Gibbs the dog was retrieved from the well and transported to Partner Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center. He was found to have no serious injuries. Goochland County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center and Metro Richmond Flying Squad also responded to the scene. Roughly 16 Goochland firefighters and 21 Henrico firefighters were operating on the scene.
Virginia department of Health, the Goochland Building Official, and Goochland General Services also responded to the scene, to cover the well and make a plan to further secure it.
